Too Many Troops?
Remember the Story of Gideon
(Judges 6:1 - 8:29)? God commissioned Gideon to rescue Israel from
the hands of the Midianites. The task was seemingly impossible and
we all remember that Gideon was, at times, unsure. So he raised an
army of 32,000 troops. They were still greatly outnumbered when,
much to Gideon’s surprise, the Lord said to Gideon, “The
troops with you are too many…[you] would only take the credit
away from me, saying, ‘my own hand has delivered me.” God
had Gideon reduce the number of troops by allowing those who were
afraid, to return home. 22,000 were afraid and went home. Then God
further sorted the troops by the way they drank water until they
numbered only 300, who had “lapped” their water. Then the Lord
said to Gideon, “With the 300 that
lapped I will deliver you.”

Wayland Spring Camp is a
precious resource of the Arkansas Conference of the United
Methodist Church. The Trustees of Wayland Spring Camp are
following God’s commission to revitalize this historic Camp and
re-mold it into a state-of-the-art Camping and Retreat Facility
for current and future generations. Like Gideon, the Trustees of
Wayland Spring Camp sometimes feel that we face pretty tall odds,
but we, like Gideon, keep being reassured by the signs and wonders
the Lord is showing us in the lives of those, young and old, who
love this historic and beautiful place.
The Trustees have adopted a
revitalization plan and constructed a new 70’ X 30’ swimming
pool as the first of many improvements. The plan of development is
in place, but the funding is not yet secured. It should be easy
for us to raise the needed funds; after all, the membership of the
Arkansas Conference is 139,714 so a gift of about $8.00 per member
would transform our historic camp—but then WE might take credit
from God saying, “My own hand has delivered me.” The
Arkansas Conference has TOO MANY TROOPS for this campaign! To
clearly show the Lord’s hand working at Wayland Spring Camp we
are looking for the 300 LAPPERS who
will allow God to work through you to deliver a miraculous rebirth
of Wayland Spring Camp.
